Trans:

Alight Holy Spirit, come to rest

Holy Spirit from above

cover all we hold dear,

give us your love.

Lay us down (as firewood), so all is right

teaching us to hold firmly to the right.

Cleanse us, so that we may know

yours is the true glory.

Background

We all love celebrations and birthdays andPipiriJune we gather for Mat?riki, the M?ori New Year and Pentecost, the birthday of our Mother Church. Mat?riki is the M?ori name for the Pleaides star cluster. It rises duringPipiri(June/July) and marks the beginning of the M?ori new year. The word is an abbreviation of Ng? Mata o te Ariki (Eyes of God). It is a time for growth and change.

This signals an important time in Aotearoa New Zealand, a celebration of people. culture, language, spirituality and history.

Pentecost was a Jewish Feast Day. All living things have a birthday. The Church is a living organism and Pentecost is her birthday. The Holy Spirit is a spirit of unity, kotahitanga, drawing all people toward the flame of truth.

At Pentecost the Wairua Tapu, Holy Spirit did not descend like a bonfire, but rather the one Spirit of God parted and came to rest on each of the Apostles individually. We each receive our share of God. God is the answer to the question that is every human soul. A tongue of fire is lit in each of us at baptism. We each house an eternal flame burning deep within. That flame will never be extinguished, even at death. Our personal flame of the Spirit, te k?pura o te Wairau, lit in our soul by the Church at baptism, will never die, because the Lord and Giver of Life is eternal.

Kia hari, kia koa! (Be happy, Be joyful!)

kia h?kari koutou katoa! (May you all feast well!)
