Te wiki o te Reo M?ori 12-18 Mahuru 2022

In the recent National Synod Synthesis the bishops noted the expressed need to expand the confident use of te reo M?ori in the liturgy, including the Mass. This action can be taken locally, in our parishes and dioceses in order to deepen our understanding of the bicultural nature of the Church in Aotearoa New Zealand.  (Conclusion #80)

A closer reading of the publication includes the following from the Gathering section.

Regret was expressed by participants, not just M?ori, at the lack of te reo and M?ori culture in our liturgy and buildings, which leads to a sense of exclusion. There is a need for education for the whole Catholic community in Aotearoa New Zealand in a bi-cultural way of being Church. (#26)

There is a desire that the liturgy truly reflect the New Zealand community, with inclusive language and greater use of the M?ori language. (#29)

One of the ways we can all benefit from M?ori culture is by embracing the gift of Te Reo M?ori in our liturgies. It is a taonga kahurangi, a precious gift, which has been given to you by the Church. Take it. Treasure it. Pray it.
